A recent article by Laura Shirk in Global Travel Retail Magazine explores how Argentina’s new president, Javier Milei, is pushing an extensive reform agenda aimed at reactivating investment and restoring public trust.
In the article, John Price, Managing Director at AMI, offers insight into Milei’s approach:
“He’s in front of a microphone every day talking about concrete achievements made in the last 24 hours… He is constantly reminding people of the progress that’s being made,” says Price.
Price adds that by controlling the narrative, Milei “keeps people off the street, keeps unions at bay and manages to continue governing despite his party having a very small number of seats in Congress.”
Regarding the lifting of currency controls, Price notes that this opens doors for hedge funds and pension funds to invest in Argentine capital markets, strengthening the currency, attracting investment, and increasing purchasing power.
He emphasizes that this investment influx is not limited to extractive sectors (mining, oil, gas, agriculture) but is now flowing into the retail and service sectors—“this is the game‑changer that everyone has been waiting for in Argentina.”
Price also speaks to the regional implications: while he doesn’t expect libertarian parties to immediately take hold elsewhere, he argues that governments in Chile, Colombia, and Ecuador will find it difficult to ignore what’s happening in Argentina if the reforms yield results.
