This video is from a Mining Coffee Chat organized by Americas Market Intelligence (AMI) and held on March 2, 2021. In the Chat, John Price, AMI’s Managing Director and leader of AMI’s Mining Practice, was joined by John Youle (Chairman, ConsultAndes), Miguel Inchaustegui Zevallos (ex-Minister of Energy and Mines of Peru), Raziel Zisman (Partner, Whittle Consulting) and Jaime Bellido (Partner, Bellido Abogados). The panel discussed the competitiveness of the Peruvian mining and future challenges in light of the upcoming April 11 election, in which the presidency and vice-presidency are in play, along with 130 seats in the unicameral congress.
Among the key highlights of the Chat:
- 2020 marked a year of health, political, and economic crisis in Peru, which has stained the implementation of initiatives to make mining more competitive
- Peru enjoys a mature mining ecosystem with access to human capital and favorable geology. The country currently has 46 mining projects. The main issue is the difficulty for juniors in obtaining permits, with standards that are not appropriate for junior miners.
- Mining in remote regions is truly a motor for development. Miners and government should work hand in hand to develop other sectors in these areas. This forms a true partnership between the mining companies and the local communities.
- The elections will not likely hinder Peru’s mining sector. 2 out of the 4 candidates that have gained most support are in support of mining. Additionally, Congress has the power to stop changes to the mining sector, shielding it from extreme anti-mining policies.
In addition to these main points, the Chat also focused on questions from the audience. Click below to see the full Mining Coffee Chat, including detailed, insightful answers from the panel to audience questions.
