Defining E-Commerce in LatAm Markets

This is a key point, because often the definition of e-commerce in LatAm and other markets can be vague or restricted to specific merchant verticals or payment methods. For the purposes of AMI’s analysis, e-commerce was defined as:

  • All sales via merchants, including retail, travel and digital goods
  • E-commerce purchases made with a PC, mobile devices (tablet, smartphone) and also in-app purchases using cards on file, as can occur with Rappi or Uber
  • Cross-border purchases made with a locally-issued card or alternative payment method
  • Recurring/subscription payments

Excluded from this analysis were P2P, in-store QR codes or bill payments, as well as cross-border purchases made with internationally issued cards or cash payments for app services
