The Cryptocurrency Revolution in Latin America Payments
A free whitepaper detailing the growth of crypto, current use cases and what to expect in 2022 and beyond
In July 2022, the Americas Market Intelligence (AMI) payments team published the results of a survey of 520 smartphone owners aged 18 and over in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru. The survey looked at their interests and buying attitudes with respect to cryptocurrencies. Some of the most significant results are mentioned in the following infographic, which has a 95% confidence level. The survey was conducted in April 2022, providing a glimpse of how the crypto market in Latin America looked before the Terra-Luna crisis.
At the end of April, we saw how the case of Terra-Luna, together with a change in the global economic context (rising rates, Ukraine–Russia conflict) sparked a new ‘Crypto Winter.’ In addition to a drop in prices across the crypto sector, these events are generating uncertainty in the markets, creating imprecision in survey-based data collection. Our survey gives us a clear picture of the last moment of ‘normality’ of the ecosystem in order to fully understand consumer interests.

If we compare these results with other AMI results obtained in late 2021 and published in our cryptocurrencies white paper, the significant increase in the purchase of cryptoassets is clear. One of the main motivators of this is protection against inflation and against the recession experienced in some Latin American economies, particularly Argentina.
