Recently, John Price — AMI’s Managing Director— and I were honored to speak at the General Meeting Conference and Exhibition of the Caribbean Shipping Association.

As part of the event, we presented a report on the current state of economies in the Caribbean and 3 key trends impacting shipping in the region:

  1. An earlier start to peak season and global conflicts and tariffs driving volumes and rates
  2. The effects of a lack of capacity on the region
  3. Operational issues, including outdated infrastructure, handling capacity and shipping rates

The report also looks at how the Panama Canal has rebounded from its drought crisis, the benefits of its “dry canal” and how China has taken advantage of a passive US presence to wield ever-greater influence in the Caribbean by playing the long game.

It wraps up with a look at what the future holds for Caribbean shipping based on broad trends that we at AMI are seeing unfold.
