Identifying Viable Energy Investment Targets in Latin America

AMI Analytical Solutions

Opportunity benchmarking, Lead Generation, Go to Market (GTM) Strategy

Client Objectives

A global diversified energy utility sought to deepen its presence in Latin America but lacked a clear strategy for doing so. To focus the search for viable projects, AMI developed an opportunity benchmark framework built on insights from dozens of experienced energy investors, public country and industry data, and proprietary AMI analysis.

Methodology

Phase I data collection relied on in-depth interviews with financial and strategic investors across more than a dozen Latin American countries, complemented by analysis of local and regional published data. Phase II involved researching the investment attractiveness of nearly 200 separate projects across five countries, sourced through interviews with more than 30 investors including asset managers, investment banks, and institutional funds.

Assets Delivered

The Phase I deliverable provided an in-depth analysis of 13 energy markets across the Latin America and Caribbean region, spanning five subsegments: natural gas generation, gas pipelines, LNG storage, renewable generation, and transmission and distribution. Phase II delivered project profiles on more than 200 opportunities, with in-depth details on the 20 most viable leads — giving the client a shortlist of the most attractive risk-return options to pursue.

The AMI Impact

Phase I gave the client’s board of directors the analytical foundation to narrow 65 energy subsegments down to the top five, establishing a focused strategy for entering the most promising segments in the region. Phase II then translated that strategy into action, helping the client identify 20 viable investment targets within those priority segments.
